Longest first: each event drops into the highest row where nothing else occupies those days, so overlaps push each other down and length sorts itself top to bottom. A parent event becomes a labelled band with its own dashed pen underneath, and its children pack into rows inside that pen. Anything instant or a few hours long goes to the strip at the bottom instead of taking a whole row.
